Des Moines is known for Gray's Lake Park, the premier park in Central Iowa. The lake has a beautifully lit trail circling it and a pedestrian bridge that offers spectacular views. Des Moines is the capital of the state of Iowa. Originally incorporated as Fort Des Moines in 1851, the name was later shortened in 1857 to Des Moines.
